Kevin and I are always looking for fun date night ideas and things to do in LA, so I was super excited to bring him with me to check out the Melrose Rooftop Theatre! Because let’s be real… dinner and a John Hughes movie? I’m in.

If you’ve never heard of the Melrose Rooftop Theatre before, it’s an outdoor movie theatre located on the rooftop of EP & LP (603 N La Cienega Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069). They host movie night almost daily (you can check the schedule here) and there’s a good mix of old classics and newer releases, so there’s truly something for everyone.

We did the Dinner + Movie package, which includes a three course dinner (tax, gratuity, and any additional items are not included) plus reserved seating for the movie for $65 per person.

We arrived at 6pm for our dinner reservation. They have time slots for 6pm, 6:15pm, 6:30pm, and 6:45pm so that you have an ample amount of time to eat your dinner without having to rush before the movie starts.

Here’s a quick look at the dinner and drinks menu. They also had their full-service menu that you can order from, but with the exception of a side order of fries, we stuck to the Dinner + Movie menu.

Kevin and I both got the Baja Tuna Tartare for our appetizer, which was light and refreshing. I liked that they paired the tuna tartare with potato chips. The tuna tartare was marinated with pickles, which was not my favorite thing, but overall, it was still good and I enjoyed it. As I mentioned earlier, we also ordered a side of fries which were just the right amount of crispy!

For our main entree, I went with the Fresh Rigatoni and Kev went with the Twice Cooked Duck Leg. We ordered one of each with the intent of sharing. The pasta and pesto sauce was so good, I’m drooling just writing this blog post and thinking about it again. The duck confit fell right off the bone and melted in your mouth! You really can’t go wrong with either dish.

For dessert, we had Carrot Cake, which I always love. The flavor was good, but the cake was a bit dry for my liking, which I’m assuming is because it’s gluten free. Regardless, it was a nice way to top off our meal before heading up to the rooftop for our movie.

We finished our entire dinner in about an hour and 15 minutes, and doors to the theatre open at 7:30pm, so we ended up waiting at our table for a bit after dinner finished. I highly recommend making your dinner reservation for around 6:15pm if you’re able to so that you can go straight to the rooftop when you’re done. (I also want to give a shout out to our server Brandon who was so kind and made us feel so welcome while we were there!)

The last time I was at EP & LP was for the Moonshot movie premiere and I had such a great time, so I was excited to be back for one of my all-time favorite movies, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off!

Their set up is so cute - I love the decor which gives it a vintage drive-in movie feel! Of course Kev and I dressed up for the occasion as Ferris Bueller and Sloane Peterson. Not to brag, but I really think we nailed our looks!

One of the perks of doing the Dinner + Movie package is that we got reserved seating (so again, there’s no need to rush through dinner). When we walked in, we were given headphones to use for listening to the movie. I also recommend bringing a blanket as it does get a little chilly in the evenings, and I ended up getting really cold.

If you get there early enough, you’ll also get to see the gorgeous sunset and a beautiful view of the city.

Once we took our seats, there’s a QR code that you can use to order any snacks, beverages, or additional food to enjoy while watching the movie. I was a little bummed because I thought there would be popcorn, but they didn’t have it on the menu. I ended up settling for Sour Patch Kids (a little steep for $6!) which I loved snacking on until the movie started.

Then, it was showtime! We had so much fun seeing Ferris Bueller’s Day Off again and getting to watch it outdoors and under the stars was a great experience. I am definitely going to need to come back to see another movie here again soon!

Huge thanks to Melrose Rooftop Theatre for hosting us! You will definitely need to check this out the next time you’re looking for something fun to do in LA. You can grab tickets for one of their upcoming showings here.
