The Six Things You Need to Know When Visiting the Bonneville Salt Flats

We made a bit of an impromptu decision to drive out to the Bonneville Salt Flats after spending a day in Park City, but it was totally worth it! I’ve always wanted to see salt flats, and since it was only an hour and a half drive (about 110 miles) from Salt Lake City, we had to go! The views were absolutely breathtaking.

Make sure to bookmark this post for my six best tips when visiting the Bonneville Salt Flats:

1. Depending on the weather and season, the salt flats may be dried up or wet. You can check the live cam online here to see the conditions. I recommend bringing a change of shoes just in case you see both options like we were able to. If it’s wet, definitely have some flip flops on hand as the bottom of the salt flats are muddy and clay-like (it is also a bit rocky so be careful when walking through it).

2. Your clothes may get dirty! The salts are no joke and I was so nervous I was going to fall in. I also recommend wearing lighter colors - Kev wore black pants and you could see the salt all over them. (However it is fairly easy to clean off!)

3. Bring a tripod! If you are not traveling with a photographer, having a tripod is super handy to get group shots together. Just make sure to set it up properly because our camera accidentally fell over into the water… oops!

4. Don’t forget some towels or wipes (especially if you’re going in barefoot like we did). Hanging out in the salt flats can get really messy very quickly!

5. Try to go during sunset. The photos will come out beautifully and it’s so pretty watching the sun go down behind the mountains.

6. Parking is free but space is limited. When we went, there were quite a few groups but we had no problems finding a spot on the side of the road. Also if the salt flats are wet, do not drive on them or you might get stuck!

I’m so glad we got to see both the wet and dry conditions of the salt flats! Kev had a ball driving our rental car through the dry portions.

I hope these tips help you out and inspires you to make the drive to the Bonneville Salt Flats! Feel free to let me know if you have any questions in the comments below!
