When Taylor Swift sang, “This slope is treacherous…” I felt that with every fiber of my being on our drive up to Hana. I have a fear of heights, driving cars that aren’t mine, and driving in places that I’m not familiar with. To say I was terrified is a complete understatement, because on this day I had to conquer all three fears.
After doing a bit of Googling, I found that the road to Hana includes 617 turns and 59 one-lane bridges. The lanes were narrow, the turns were short, and I felt like I could fall off the cliff at any given second.
But getting to see the beauty of nature along the way, like these amazing waterfalls, made me feel like we were in a whole other world.
We were warned to do some research on Hana before making our way up there, mainly because there isn’t any cell reception for a good chunk of the drive. We didn’t. Kevin was nervous about it, but I enthusiastically told him we should wing it, because that’s what makes exploring all the more fun!
I could not have been more wrong. We tried visiting the Waiʻānapanapa State Park to see the famous black sand beach, but didn’t know reservations were required so we were unfortunately turned away. I was so disappointed, but after driving a few more miles down the road, we came across an open beach that had black sand too!
While it may not have been exactly what we wanted, I’m glad we still had the opportunity to see the beautiful black sand and snap these photos to make our trip to Hana worthwhile.
For my outfit, I wanted to wear something that felt more fall appropriate for Hawaii, and this dress that Unique Vintage kindly gifted me was perfect! The long sleeves made it feel more fall, but the airy crepe material made it breathable for the warm temperatures. I accessorized with another flower hair clip I picked up from our last trip to Oahu and matched it with my light up Mickey lei from Disney’s Aulani. (I bought it on our last day there and didn’t really get a chance to wear it so I made sure to bring it along with us for this trip!) For comfort, I wore my trusty Converse high-top sneakers which always go with any outfit.
Kevin wanted to try some Huli-Huli chicken for lunch, so thankfully with a bit of reception at the beach, we were able to locate a spot. Naturally, it was the perfect opportunity to do another mini photoshoot with our jeep, which we fully took advantage of.
This was one of my favorite shots of the entire trip, and was inspired by the talented and always inspiring Kylie Katich!
The Huli-Huli chicken was delicious, and Kevin ordered it as a combo along with some ribs. Paired with an ocean view, could this meal have been any more perfect?!
We ended our last full day in Maui catching the sunset outside of our resort in Kaanapali. Hawaiian sunsets are truly the best.
Hope you enjoyed coming along with us on our trip to Maui! Until the next adventure…
