Kristina Wong, Sweatshop Overlord Opening Night at the Kirk Douglas Theatre
Disclosure: Center Theatre Group provided us with two complimentary tickets to Kristina Wong, Sweatshop Overlord opening night. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
You needle join Kristina Wong’s Auntie Sewing Squad! Center Theatre Group invited me to opening night of Kristina Wong, Sweatshop Overlord last night and when we say we need more representation and to hear more of our stories, this production is exactly what I mean.
It was my first time at the Kirk Douglas Theatre and I loved it so much! Both the exterior and interior are absolutely stunning and I loved how intimate this theatre felt.
The theatre is located at 9820 Washington Blvd, Culver City, CA 90232. There is plenty of metered street parking, or you can also park at the Culver City City Hall where you can get free parking for three hours with validation from the theatre lobby.
We had great seats and even spotted Sandra Oh in the audience before the show started!
This show takes us through the start of the pandemic, when Kristina Wong decided to spring into action for communities across the country by putting together the Auntie Sewing Squad to sew masks and help save lives.
As she shared her reflections, I was touched by her honesty - as a Chinese American, I felt so seen and represented, and related to many of her struggles and fears. Kristina tells her story in such a beautiful way - there are moments throughout the show that will make you both laugh and cry. I felt empowered knowing that in the midst of so much turmoil in our country, so many “aunties” came together to selflessly help others in the best way they knew how - by taking their sewing skills and doing something for the greater good.
It was such an honor getting to meet Kristina Wong after the show! She was so sweet and down to earth!
