Dìdi x Fatty Mart Taiwanese Cooking Class

Last night Thaddeus invited me to attend a special cooking demonstration with him at Fatty Mart in celebration of Dìdi which releases in select theatres today!

We arrived early so we could sit up in the front for the demonstration, and we also got to enjoy some refreshments from Kace Tea, which is a premium Taiwanese fruit tea.

Focus Features also provided some goodie bags, and we loved these cute squirrel stuffed animals they gave us! I think squirrels play a prominent part in the movie, and I can’t wait to see what the meaning behind it is.

David Kuo (the owner of Fatty Mart and chef of Little Fatty) and his godmother Judy taught us how to make Taiwanese style mapo tofu!

The writer/director of Dìdi, Sean Wang, stopped by to say hello to the crowd! It was cool getting to hear about why he wanted to make this film, and I love that we have another movie where the AAPI community can feel represented and see themselves in.

About Dìdi: In 2008, during the last month of summer before high school begins, an impressionable 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy learns what his family can’t teach him: how to skate, how to flirt, and how to love your mom.

I also got to meet Sean after the demonstration and he was very kind to take a photo with me.

We then got to do a little shopping over at Fatty Mart, and it is such a cute market! They also had samples of mapo tofu which was so delicious.

About Fatty Mart: Fatty Mart (located at 12210 Venice Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90066) is David Kuo’s answer to the need for an eco-conscious convenience store offering multicultural specialties in the heart of Mar Vista. They offer dine-in, grab and go, and eventually will offer delivery too.

We also got a chance to meet David towards the end of the evening and he was so sweet! I loved his “I ❤️ Taiwan” hat and he sold me the last one he had in stock.

Please support the AAPI community and buy a ticket to see Dìdi this weekend! It shows the movie studios that films like this matter for representation and that we need to see more stories like this.

Huge thank you to Focus Features for having us and to Thaddeus for inviting me to be his +1! Dìdi is now playing in select theatres!
