Last night, Kevin and I were invited to the exclusive LA premiere of Emily the Criminal starring Aubrey Plaza and Theo Rossi! We were so excited to be part of one of the first audiences to ever see the film.

This event wasn’t your traditional Hollywood red carpet premiere, but I didn’t mind it at all! It was low-key and intimate, and I felt very honored to have been part of the audience that evening.

I’m normally a sucker for rom-com and animated movies, so this film was definitely outside of my usual comfort zone. It’s about a woman named Emily who is struggling to find a job amidst a heaping amount of student loan debt, and in an attempt to pay it off, she gets involved with credit card fraud acting as a dummy shopper to make money. As a fan of Aubrey Plaza since her Parks & Recreation days, I was intrigued to see her in a different type of role, and let me tell you she does not disappoint! She was such a strong female lead which was empowering to watch. She also had great chemistry with Theo Rossi, and together, they truly made you feel like you were immersed in the film.

The film was thrilling, and had me at the edge of my seat the entire time. Aubrey and Theo’s performances were raw, vulnerable, and so authentic to their characters. The filming style itself felt cinematic, yet personal, and I felt like I was waiting in the getaway car with Emily and Youcef (Theo’s character). My heart was beating out of my chest even after the film because I felt so entrenched in the story!

After the screening, there was a Q&A with John Patton Ford (the writer/director), Aubrey Plaza, and Theo Rossi. It was great getting to hear the inspiration behind the film and some of the challenges they faced making it. John mentioned that they only had 21 days to shoot the movie, and I was impressed that they created this masterpiece under such a tight production schedule. I also loved hearing about how the three of them were able to rehearse together for a few days (I didn’t know this, but I guess this is normally unheard of when shooting films), which also helped with creating the chemistry between the two characters that we see onscreen.

We then went to the reception afterwards where we got to meet Aubrey Plaza and Theo Rossi! They were both incredibly kind and gracious with their time - I am so grateful we got to tell them they did an amazing job! It was the perfect way to end our evening.

Thanks again to Roadside Attractions Films and Vertical Entertainment for the invite to the LA premiere of Emily the Criminal starring Aubrey Plaza and Theo Rossi - be sure to catch it in theaters beginning August 12!
