Dear Evan Hansen, today is going to be a good day and here’s why - the show is back at the Ahmanson Theatre! This is one of my favorite musicals for many reasons, so to say the least, I was excited to see the show again!
Due to some extra credits Kev had, we had the luxury of being able to Uber to the show. Surprisingly enough, the drive up to LA was smoother than I could’ve ever imagined. We arrived at the theatre around 7:15pm and stopped by the box office to pick up our tickets from will call.
I don’t know if this is new for this season, but I’ve been loving all the fun neon signs with each of the show names outside the theatre! Last time we were here, we went to see King James at the Mark Taper Forum and they had a sign for that show too. Either way, it makes for a great photo op!
We got settled into our seats around 7:30pm and we had a great view of the stage. As I mentioned earlier, Dear Evan Hansen is one of my favorite musicals - the soundtrack is so good - it’s one of those “no skip” kind of set lists. My favorite songs hands down are “For Forever” and “You Will Be Found.” Make sure to have some tissues handy, because you’re going to need them!
On a personal level, the relatability of dealing with anxiety and depression is what gets me the most with Dear Evan Hansen. If you’ve never seen this show before, the main character Evan has severe social anxiety, and while he outwardly shows more of his anxiety, it made me feel really seen because I feel like that’s what’s going on inside my head when I’m freaking out trying to deal with my own. While the show is by no means perfect, I appreciate the space it holds to discuss mental health and portraying an example of what life looks like with anxiety and depression, as well as the secondary storyline of how social media can take a toll on us.
Huge thank you to Center Theatre Group for having me! Be sure to check out Dear Evan Hansen playing now through 7/31 at the Ahmanson Theatre - grab your tickets here!
